Water Tender/Maintenance

DEFINITION

Under general supervision provides general labor activities for district operations, and functions as a Water Tender/Maintenance. Position is full time with scheduled irregular work hours.

JOB CHARACTERISTICS

The duties of the position requires work as a Water Tender and when not working as a Water Tender job requires basic skills in performing general labor to include such activities as weed spraying, painting, use of shovel and other small tools, minor mechanical repair and maintenance, minor vehicle maintenance and repairs. Position will also be required to have a Class A drivers license and be able to operate a backhoe.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives direct supervision from Operations Manager and other management staff.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED/ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Reports to supervision the need for repairs and parts.

Receives and records irrigation water delivery orders for district customers.

Makes water deliveries by turning on and off water supplies from main sources to feed lateral and sub-lateral pipelines.

Sets valves, checks meters, and measures water flow, making necessary adjustments to correct surges, excess water and low water levels.

Must have the ability to deliver proper amounts of irrigation water on a timely basis.

Must be able to analyze problems in water delivery systems and take appropriate actions.

Meets with farmers and irrigators to discuss water delivery problems.

May make immediate adjustments to resolve complaints or refer them to appropriate management before taking further action.

Takes an annual crop census and maintains current information to project future water delivery needs.

Repair and replace concrete and asbestos pipe.

General concrete work.

Keeps accurate records as job assignments require.

Performs yard maintenance and cleanup.

Performs other related work as assigned

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of the operation, use, limitations and service requirements of district vehicles, and the laws, ordinances, and safety regulations governing the operation of the same, and compliance with such laws and ordinances.

Drive/operate safely and without damage to equipment and tools. Have the ability to recognize hazardous conditions and to take necessary precautions in all job activities.

Ability to perform physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, physical coordination; to read, write, and speak English; to perform simple mathematical calculations; to carry out verbal or written instructions; drive a vehicle with automatic transmission; and perform all work
SAFELY.

Must be able to effectively and politely communicate with the general public and operate district radio.

Position is required to lift or move heavy objects up to 60 pounds.

Performs as Class A truck driver and equipment operator of a backhoe as necessary.

EDUCATION

Completion of the 12th grade or its equivalent.

EXPERIENCE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a satisfactory driving record and maintain a Class A drivers license. Must be in good physical condition and able to do strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions. Must successfully pass a pre-employment examination to include drug screen before employment with the District.

Must work flexible work hours, be on call and be able to respond to district emergencies in a timely manner.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
